Biography
Born in Barranquilla (Colombia), a port city located along the Caribbean Sea to a Colombian mother Nidia del Carmen Ripoll Torrado of Spanish and Italian descent, and a Lebanese father born in New York, William Mebarak Chadid. His name in Arabic means "grateful". His brothers and sisters from a previous marriage of his father, are: Lucia, Alberto, Moises, Tonino (closest to Shakira and works for her), and Antonio Eduardo.

At the age of 8 years, she composed her first song Tus Gafas Oscuras. This song was dedicated to his father, who wore sunglasses to hide his sadness at having lost a son. She appeared in numerous television shows and competitions in its region, including a weekly television program, Vivan Los Niños. Now she has become a local celebrity.

Thanks to Monica Ariza (his producer), she auditioned before Ciro Vargas who proposed the audition because he was impressed. Vargas offers demo Shakira to artistic producer at Sony but is not convinced by the young prodigy and think it's a lost cause. A trap was laid for the executives of Sony Music Entertainment, they are brought into a bar in Bogota where Shakira interpreter 3 songs. There they fall under his charm and are signing a contract to record 3 discs.

So at age 13 she recorded her first album Magia, which has become a collector's item because of the success of the singer. Peligro is his second album in 1993, when she was 16 but unfortunately success is still not at the rendezvous. She chose to take a break and finish high school.

Shakira appeared in 1994, television plays and series in the El Oasis, in agreement with Televisión de Colombia. She sings the generic duet with one of the other players and leave the series in 1997. His next album, Pies Descalzos, will make her a star in Latin America and Spain, thanks to the single Estoy Aquí. In 1997, during a concert in his hometown (Barranquilla) Two young girls die at the entrance of the concert crushed by the crowd, following this event Shakira thought to end his career but found the strength to continue thanks to its fans. Then, in 1998, the album Dónde están los ladrones? With Emilio Estefan as executive producer and Shakira herself as Artistic Producer. The album, with songs Ciega, Sordomuda and Ojos Así (duet with the Egyptian singer Amr Diab), is increasing its succès.Lors the release of the single "Ojos Así" it surprises his fans and his entourage in wearing a fiery red hair. At the end of 1999, she surprised again by becoming blond color she kept until recently (she chose that color to feel more sexy and less compared to the Canadian singer, Alanis Morissette). She began the tour Anfibio Tour in March 2000 and will conclude in May 2000.

She then decided to learn English. The album Laundry Service in 2001, and the clip single Whenever, Wherever realize his dream of international career. She chose to name his tour Tour Of The Mongoose (the tour of the mongoose).

After a long absence in France, Shakira back in 2005, with La Tortura (she performs with singer Alejandro Sanz), as sensual introduce an album in two volumes: Fijacion Oral Vol.1 June 6 in Spanish and Oral Fixation Vol.2 November 29 in English. The album name means "oral fixation" in French. The singer says that "everything comes from the mouth, the sensual part of the body with which (she) experiences of life." Both albums Fijación Oral Vol.1 and Oral Fixation Vol.2 has been dedicated to Patricia Tellez his manager in Latin America for years and suddenly died of cancer in 2004.

In February 2006, Shakira recorded a duet with Wyclef Jean, The Fugees. The title is called Hips Do not Lie. It appears on the reissue of the album Oral Fixation Vol.2 released in March 2006. Hips Do not Lie has been remixed into a version called "bamboo" which was sung by the Colombian July 9 for the final of the FIFA World Cup 2006. A controversy has installed around the piece: it could be that there was plagiarism. Intro Hips Do not Lie (which appears several times in the song) is a sample of salsa song Amores como el nuestro de Jerry Rivera. However, Sony had already agreed to there use of the song. In addition, another Hispanic singer-songwriter, Luis Días attack Colombian singer for the couplet baila en la calle de noche, baila en la calle de día.

Regarding the first opus, Fijacion Oral Vol.1, a third single called Dia de Enero was released in Hispanic countries.

In addition, Shakira began June 14, 2006 the launch of his new tour Oral Fixation Tour in Zaragoza in Spain, a country where she remained until July before going in August and September in the United States. Other dates around the world should be added soon. But we already know it will go to Mexico and other Latino countries this fall.

The concert in the Croatian capital, Zagreb, had a deficit of 320 000 because there were not enough tickets sold: they were too expensive relative to average incomes in this country. The fact that the concert was announced only one month in advance may also be affected. Although some places have been allocated free of charge, there were 4,000 people in the stadium.

Two more singles were released in November 2006:

The first, La Pared (The Wall) is the 4th single from the opus Fijacion Oral vol.1. This title is apparently a single promotion, not sold and a clip is available. The clip was filmed during one of these concerts in Mexico in October 2006 and provides an acoustic performance of the song.

The second single, released it worldwide, entitled Illegal. Excerpt from Oral Fixation Vol.2 opus, this title is a duet with guitarist Carlos Santana who plays bass all tired of the music. Illegal does not know the same success that the overwhelming Hips do not lie, but still ranks in top thirty singles sold worldwide during the last 3 weeks of 2006.

In spring 2007, Shakira will appear on the reissue of the album B'Day Beyoncé. The two singers were in fact a duet entitled Beautiful Liar, which won a resounding success.

His DVD Live In Miami - Oral Fixation Tour, shot his last tour, will be available November 12, 2007 with a bonus CD.

In late 2007, Shakira has composed two songs for the soundtrack of the film "Love in the Time of Cholera" from the novel by Colombian author and friend of Shakira, Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

The singer then works on his next album for which she had written 63 songs. For this new English album, the singer with 70 million albums sold worldwide surrounded producer Pharrell Williams and Wyclef Jean with whom she had worked for the tube Hips Do not Lie. Shakira has also recorded a track with the Puerto Rican group Calle 13 and plans to record with the star of Rai Khaled.

This album should be the last for Epic Records. After that, the Colombian singer's best selling of all time would have expected to join the important event company Live Nation, like Madonna or Jay-Z.

In June 2009, entitled "Loba" for the Spanish version ( "She-wolf" in English) is announced and sent to radio stations. The title marks a new musical direction that Shakira defined as the "disco '80s. This new title shares for some fans who do not recognize their idol and qualify the mediocre song. They fear a future commercial failure and an unsuccessful return but only time will confirm or not their fears. Indeed, two albums in English-and Spanish-are out in the fall 2009.

The singer has also announced plans to finally start a family with her fiance Antonio De La Rua, but only after promoting his two new albums.

The second single "Did it Again" was released in November. It comes with a clip in which one can see the singer perform an acrobatic dance and sensual enough. Again, fans remain divided, but nevertheless have a slight preference for this new title. Meanwhile, he announced on his official website that the single that will follow, "Give It Up To Me", will be featuring with Lil Wayne produced by Timbaland. This title does not appear on the album but some hope for a rerelease.
